Long, flexible tubes called suction catheters are used to clear the airway of respiratory secretions. Suctioning is done to remove secretions from the airway and stop clogging. Suction canister and a device that creates suction are both attached to the suction catheter’s one end. To remove secretions, the open end of an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube is moved across the airway.
